Xperia S UI poses for Mr. Blurrycam, calls itself ‘UXP NXT’ (video)

Mr. Blurrycam shows Xperia S video with Sony's new 'UXP NXT' UI
We’ve seen the Sony Xperia S before, heck, we’ve even gotten our grubby mitts on it. The Xperia S UI, on the other hand, has been a bit of an elusive beast. That is, until now — the tech world’s very own out-of-focus paparazzi caught a look at the handset’s upcoming UI, revealing a slightly blurry view of the Xperia S ‘ finer details. The UI is apparently being christened “UXP NXT” and is slathered on top of Android 2.3, though a 4.0 update is reportedly on the way. The video shows off the home and lock screens, gallery, music player and a new rendition of Timescape. Anywho, feel free to check out the above vid in all its blurrycam glory.

Sony Xperia U snapped ahead of MWC launch

Sony Xperia U snapped ahead of MWC launch

New pictures of the purported Sony Xperia U handset have emerged ahead of a potential launch at Mobile World Congress next week.

The diminutive device is shown next to the recently-unveiled Xperia S and will reportedly arrive toting a 3.5-inch WVGA display and a scaled-back 1GHz processor.

According to the snaps, the Android handset, known in some circles as the Kumquat or the ST25i, brings the same aesthetic qualities to the table, although the Sony Ericsson branding is still present.

The attractive, squarer design, curved back, protruding chin and the transparent strip of capacitive buttons near the foot of the device are all in place.

More Minis

Sony has previous for releasing mini versions of its popular handsets, with 2010′s Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and last year’s Xperia Mini.

It seems the strategy will continue despite Sony buying out Ericsson’s half of the partnership.

Unveiled at CES, the Sony Xperia S was the first device to showcase Sony-only branding and comes loaded with a 4.3-inch Reality Display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 12-megapixel camera.

The device will launch in the UK on March 5th and will be available for the SIM-free price of £429.

Sony Xperia U ‘Kumquat’ pics leak, gets sized up ahead of MWC

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

It looks like one of Sony’s latest creations, the Xperia S, could be getting a little brother at next week’s Mobile World Congress, according to a series of leaked pics. Sixteen crystal-clear images show the new sibling — none other than the previously seen ST25i, aka Xperia U or Kumquat — snuggled up to the Xperia S. As it appears, the handset will likely be a lower-end offering in the Xperia lineup: it’s said to feature a 3.5-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core CPU, Exmor R sensor with 720p video capture and a tiny user-replaceable 1,290mAh battery. Oh, and Android 2.3.7 is rumored, though the rumor specifically mentions it will soon be upgraded to ICS. If these whispers turn out to be accurate, the U will likely be pitched as a smaller and less expensive option for fans of the Xperia S’s design. Also, we don’t foresee the device’s Sony Ericsson branding to make an appearance at the show, given the two companies’ recent divorce. To check out the full suite of comparison pics, check out the source link below.

[Thanks, Pavlo]

Sony Xperia S: pre-orders begin today

Sony Xperia S: pre-orders begin today

The Sony Xperia S is now available for pre-order in the UK on monthly contracts from O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

Website BuyMobilePhones has listed Sony’s first solo handset on a range of contracts available for customers to pre-order.

You can pick up a free Xperia S handset on contract for as little as £21.50 per month (with O2) which will give you with 100 mins, 500 texts and 500MB of data each month.

Not bad, not bad at all

This makes the Xperia S competitively priced as it offers some impressive specs including a 4.3-inch HD (720p) screen, 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 12MP camera all wrapped into an appealing and slender case.

One downside is the Xperia S will ship with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) instead of the latest Ice Cream Sandwich software.

This is disappointing to see but Sony has told us the Ice Cream Sandwich update will arrive in the second half of 2012.

Sony Xperia Sola appears at US Patent Office, forgets to mention its codename

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

So far, the extent of Sony’s 2012 smartphone portfolio for the US extends only to the AT&T-bound Xperia Ion, with no word just yet whether the see-through banded Xperia S will arrive on American shores. What happens if it was called the Xperia Sola? That very name’s showed up at the US Patent and Trademark Office, although that’s largely it. So it could be a phone we’ve already seen, or perhaps one of those many road-mapped pseudonyms. Well, with a certain big mobile event just around the corner, we’re sure to get a few more answers on Sony’s other plans for the New World later this month.

Sony Ericsson hangs ten, launches Xperia Active Billabong Edition

Sony Ericsson hangs ten, launches Xperia Active Billabong Edition

Sony Ericsson is looking to start a bromance with the McTwist-loving, Double-Cork-landing, A-Frame-riding masses jonesing for a new Android device. The handset maker has announced a “global strategic alliance” with Billabong to launch the Xperia Active Billabong Edition smartphone in select markets. The handset will come preloaded with exclusive content, including Billabong screen savers, and bundle several Billabong-branded games and applications. As the two companies tell it, the Xperia ABE is the “ideal smartphone for extreme sports enthusiasts.” Accordingly, Sony Ericsson hardware is about to start making appearances at various “major” Billabong events. Unfortunately, this next bit is really going to harsh your mello: the hardware is identical to that of the Xperia Active announced back in June, complete with a single-core 1GHz processor, Gingerbread, a 3-inch Reality display and a five-megapixel shooter. Even with its no-so-extreme spec sheet, we give SE a gnar-lay for effort.
