Quix Mixer Hangs Around Looking Cool

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

Gorgeous retro Quix is sadly not ready to mix

I have found through experimentation that one of the best hand mixers available to man is a power drill with a ballon whisk clamped into the chuck. It will fluff up egg whites and cream in no time, is free (assuming you already own the drill and whisk) and is about as butch as you can get in the kitchen without breaking out a flamethrower to glaze a crème brûlée.

On the other hand, it isn’t nearly as sleekly good looking as Meike Harde’s Quix, a handheld mixer of beautiful proportions and startling practicality. As in pro kitchen kit, the buttons are sealed behind a silicone cover, and they are also pressure sensitive (which could get tiring after a while). The angled body (designed to look like a crispy chocolate shell) is also formed to hook over the edge of a bowl and hang there, and the power cord is retractable.

Then again, you might re-consider the ugly but effective power drill method: It has the big advantage of being a real, buy-able product, whereas the Quix is–sadly–nothing but a concept.

The Love Box is an analog video mixer, house of mirrors for your iPhone (video)

Category: Mobile PhonesGadgets & Tech @

There’s something romantic about hacking the iPhone, especially when it means finding ways to personalize the massively popular handset. Apps like Instagram may help you realize artistic talent, but software just doesn’t get those creative juices flowing like an old-fashioned piece of hardware can. Despite its taboo-sounding name, The Love Box isn’t an adult toy in the traditional sense, instead serving as an analog video (and stills) mixer for your iPhone 4 or 4S. Consisting of a wooden box and an angled sliding mirror, the homegrown contraption lets you simultaneously capture the action in front of and behind you in a single image. It was originally designed in Barcelona to capture two people conversing for a documentary called “The Love Box Conversations,” hence the name. The “lowest-tech accessory for the highest-tech phone” is available now as part of a very limited initial run of 100 units, and can be yours for €57.63 (about $ 77.50) if you hit up the source link below.

Line6 introduces StageScape visual mixer, lets you touch it up to eleven

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

It might seem like we’ve gone mixer mad around here, but with a huge music trade-show starting this week, it’s no surprise there’s a pile of new tech on offer. The StageScape M20d visual mixer from Line 6 being one such example. Of course, we have inputs (12 line / mic, four line-only, and two for USB/SD streaming) and outputs (four XLR monitors, two master) all strummed along by internal 32-bit floating-point processing. What piqued our interest, however, was that seven inch screen you see up there. Rather than fumble over a mash of faders, you thumb the instrument’s icon to pull up its parameters. Other features include Kaossilator style X-Y multi-parameter control, and color coded pots — presumably so you don’t kill the guitar solo by mistake. A final flourish is remote control via an iPad, for mid-track sound tweaks — though you might need one of these. Tap the PR after the break for more info.

Love Box Analog Video Mixer For iPhone

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

As with any good magic, it’s all done with mirrors

Its name–Love Box–might sound like a male adult toy, but it is in fact a video mixer for the iPhone. It’s not an app, nor is it a complex control board filled with knobs and dials. Instead, its all done with mirrors.

Or mirror. The Love Box, from the Honest&Smile agency in Barcelona, Spain, is a wooden box with a mirror inside, set at an angle. Another slot holds your iPhone 4/S. By finagling the iPhone’s camera into the right spot, you can shoot split-screen video (and stills): the right side shows what’s in front of you and the left side reflects whatever is behind you, and slightly off to one side.

Clearly, it is quite ridiculous and unwieldy, but that kind of problem hasn’t stopped 15 zillion people from using Instagram. On the other hand, Instagram is free, whereas the Love Box is costs close to $ 100 from the Etsy store (or the Regalador store in Spain).
