Dell leaves its US phone plans blank after ending sales of the Venue and Venue Pro here

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

While Dell may still be releasing Streaks and Venues in other countries, a company spokesman tells PC World that its last remaining phone stateside, the Venue and Venue Pro are no longer on sale. While the short lifecycle of mobile products was cited in the pair’s time with us drawing to a close, the lack of replacements means Dell is out of the smartphone game in this country less than two years after entering with the Aero and Streak 5. While the spokesperson confirmed Dell would introduce more mobile devices in the US later this year, they could not say whether or not phones would be among them. We’re not sure what the reboot of its product lines will entail — other than a lack of connection to departed section head Ron Garriques — but at least it still has those Thunder, Smoke, Lightning and Flash names in their pocket whenever something new arrives.

Sony shows off PlayStation Vita’s augmented reality chops at GDC, leaves the AR marker cards at home

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

The PlayStation Vita’s current augmented reality mini-games may be anchored to a handful of marker cards, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Front and center at Sony’s GDC booth was “Magnet,” a developer tech demo that shows off the next generation handheld’s markerless chops. The application maps out the texture and patterns to create its own marker, which would allow developers to create more natural AR experiences that won’t burden players with the hassle of carrying around marker cards. Sony says the tech demo won’t be evolving into a full game, but hopes it will inspire developers to build something new and exciting for the handheld. Although staff on hand couldn’t say for sure that this is an off-shoot of Sony’s SmartAR technology, we think it looks awfully familiar.

Peter Molyneux leaves Lionhead and Microsoft to found 22 Cans

Category: ComputersGadgets & Tech @

Peter Molyneux will leave Microsoft Game / Lionhead Studios once he’s finished developing Fable: The Journey for Kinect. He’ll be replaced by co-founder Mark Webley at the studio, with Redmond yet to name his successor at corporate level. Molyneux will partner with (Lionhead’s) former CTO Tim Rance and Director Peter Murphy on 22 Cans, developing games under their own flag as he did when founding Lionhead and Bullfrog before that. The new company is based in Farnborough, 12 miles west of Lionhead’s Guildford location and was registered on February 20th of this year. Given our childhood love of both Bullfrog and Lionhead’s games, we wish both parties the very best — you can check out when he visited The Engadget Show here.

Games legend Peter Molyneux leaves Microsoft

Games legend Peter Molyneux leaves Microsoft

Peter Molyneux, one of the UK’s highest profile games developers, has announced he is leaving Microsoft after five years at the company.

Molyneux joined Microsoft after Lionhead, the studio he founded, was bought by the computing giant and with it games franchises such as Fable and Black & White.

In a blog post, Molyneux revealed that he was ready to leave the company and will bow out after an upcoming sequel to Fable.

New independent venture

"It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey," said Molyneux in a statement.

"I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created, from Black & White to Fable to our pioneering work with Milo and Kate for the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture."

The new company he refers to is 22 Cans, which he has started up with ex-Lionhead bigwig Tim Rance.

Molyneux spoke to TechRadar last year as part of Brit Week and praised the game Minecraft, saying, "It is probably the most impressive game I’ve seen in the last ten years."

Let’s hope his new endeavour – away from making things for Kinect – means he will create a game with similar idiosyncrasies.

Windows Phone exec Brandon Watson leaves Microsoft, headed to Amazon

Category: LaptopsGadgets & Tech @

There’s some more corporate reshuffling going on in the Windows Phone universe this week, now that Brandon Watson has confirmed his departure from Microsoft. Watson, who served as head of the WP Developer Experience, announced the news on his Twitter page Friday, and later told ZDNet that he’s heading to Amazon, where he’ll be Director of the Kindle Cross Platform team. In an e-mail to ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley, Watson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, but ultimately decided that “the opportunity placed in front of me that was too big to pass up.” At Amazon, the exec will be charged with laying out a roadmap for Kindle app development across first- and third-party platforms, including, of course, Windows Phone and Windows 8. Microsoft has yet to announce a replacement, issuing the following statement: “We can confirm February 6th is Brandon Watson’s last day at Microsoft. Brandon did a great job helping us build a vibrant developer community and we wish him well with his next adventure.”

Airport Utility 6.0 flies right into the iCloud, leaves old AirPorts behind

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

The latest version of Apple’s Airport Utility software has arrived, alongside those iCloud-supporting firmware updates for the company’s network hardware, including the AirPort Extreme, the AirPort Express and Time Capsule. Unfortunately, Airport Utility 6.0 doesn’t support pre-2007 models, that is; 802.11g-only devices. As we already know, iCloud support requires the new release, running on OSX Lion and if you’re still clinging onto your MobileMe account, we’ve got more bad news — this won’t work with the new software either. Fortunately, you’ll still be able to configure (firmware-updated) older models with previous AirPort Utility versions. TidBITS has gone into fine detail on compatibility changes, so be sure to check the source if there’s any niggling doubts.
