Windows Phone exec Brandon Watson leaves Microsoft, headed to Amazon

Category: LaptopsGadgets & Tech @

There’s some more corporate reshuffling going on in the Windows Phone universe this week, now that Brandon Watson has confirmed his departure from Microsoft. Watson, who served as head of the WP Developer Experience, announced the news on his Twitter page Friday, and later told ZDNet that he’s heading to Amazon, where he’ll be Director of the Kindle Cross Platform team. In an e-mail to ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley, Watson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, but ultimately decided that “the opportunity placed in front of me that was too big to pass up.” At Amazon, the exec will be charged with laying out a roadmap for Kindle app development across first- and third-party platforms, including, of course, Windows Phone and Windows 8. Microsoft has yet to announce a replacement, issuing the following statement: “We can confirm February 6th is Brandon Watson’s last day at Microsoft. Brandon did a great job helping us build a vibrant developer community and we wish him well with his next adventure.”

Airport Utility 6.0 flies right into the iCloud, leaves old AirPorts behind

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

The latest version of Apple’s Airport Utility software has arrived, alongside those iCloud-supporting firmware updates for the company’s network hardware, including the AirPort Extreme, the AirPort Express and Time Capsule. Unfortunately, Airport Utility 6.0 doesn’t support pre-2007 models, that is; 802.11g-only devices. As we already know, iCloud support requires the new release, running on OSX Lion and if you’re still clinging onto your MobileMe account, we’ve got more bad news — this won’t work with the new software either. Fortunately, you’ll still be able to configure (firmware-updated) older models with previous AirPort Utility versions. TidBITS has gone into fine detail on compatibility changes, so be sure to check the source if there’s any niggling doubts.

Jon Rubinstein leaves HP

Jon Rubinstein, the former CEO of Palm and the man who spearheaded the development of the WebOS software, has left Hewlett-Packard.

Rubinstein joined HP when the company bought WebOS back in 2010 and has now completed his 12-24 month commitment to the company.

"I am going to take a well deserved break after four and a half years of developing webOS," Rubinstein told AllThings D.

HP followed up with a statement of its own: "Jon has fulfilled his commitment and we wish him well."

Pre-conceived ideas

After a term at Apple working on the iPod line, Rubinstein returned to prominence around the time Palm made a comeback with the Pre handset in 2008, which saw the debut of WebOS.

The Pre was not a success and the promising WebOS software failed to reach its potential under both Palm and HP’s leadership.

Following the TouchPad tablet fiasco, HP decided to release WebOS to the open source.

Jon Rubinstein leaves Hewlett Packard

Category: Mobile PhonesGadgets & Tech @

We’re hearing news that former Palm chief Jon Rubinstein has decided to leave Hewlett Packard. According to AllThingsD, it comes at the end of his 24-month commitment period to remain at the company after its disastrous acquisition of Palm. HP’s Mylene Mangalidan is reported to say that “Jon has fulfilled his commitment and we wish him well.”

Rubinstein rose to fame as a hardware guru at NeXT before joining Apple after the company was purchased in 1996. He was instrumental in developing the iMac and PowerMac desktops before spearheading the iPod project which would herald the company’s growing dominance. After leaving the company in 2006, he joined Palm to help revitalize the flagging handset maker, developing the Palm Pre and WebOS software platforms before being named as its CEO in 2009. A year later, Hewlett Packard purchased the company for $ 1.2 billion but a year afterward, Palm was closed down and Rubinstein was shifted to a “product innovation role” within HP — before departing today.

Sony ST25i Kumquat leaves fruity name behind, becomes Xperia U

We offer with enough fruitiness all day, so it’s refreshing — pardon the pun — to see that Sony’s ST25i Kumquat is leaving its citrusy roots driving for some very good ole-fashioned company branding. A document located on the web site of Indonesia’s FCC equivalent lists the handset as the Xperia U ST25i, which lines up nicely with Sony’s current LT26i Xperia S nomenclature. Of study course this also can make us wonder if Sony’s preparing to comply with in Samsung’s Galaxy-branded footsteps by generating an orchard of Xperia types. We’ll just have to wait and see, correct?

Audi combines HUD with gesture controls, leaves us wanting

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

Audi is back at CES for the second year in a row, complete with a retina-searing, biggie-sized booth, its next-gen Audi Command interface and a prototype heads-up display that combines three displays with gesture controls.

The setup uses one HUD in front of the driver, another in front of the passenger and yet another display in the middle that’s viewable by both people in the front seats. While that’s not particularly revolutionary, the transfer of information from one display to the next is. If the passenger looks up a restaurant using their own display, she can swipe it over to the center HUD, providing the driver with navigation instructions. The display tech is still a few years away from production, but don’t expect the gesture controls to come along for the ride.
