Inhabitat’s Week in Green: glowing green sea, an equinox house and energy-efficient skyscrapers

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Tidal energy made waves around the world this week as Inhabitat reported that Verdant Power was awarded the first license for an East River power project in NYC, while across the pond the UK announced plans for a gigantic 27 gigawatt Marine Energy Park and a new SeaRaser tidal power plant that could be the world’s cheapest method of producing electricity. We also watched President Obama set forth a green blueprint for America in his State of the Union Address, despite going on to support oil and gas drilling in his following speech on Thursday. Meanwhile, Scotland made headlines as a new company launched with plans to turn whisky into biofuel, and Google Earth revealed an alarming patch of glowing green sea near a nuclear power plant.

It was also a big week for solar-powered architecture as Deutsche Bank completed the world’s tallest roof-mounted solar array and the U.S. Department of Energy announced that the 2013 Solar Decathlon will be taking place in sunny Southern California. We also took a peek inside a crazy solar-powered billboard house, and we showcased plans for a super efficient Equinox house that tracks the sun. We also brought you the world’s first 1.4 billion Euro home made from shredded bills, and we rounded up the 6 most energy-efficient skyscrapers in New York City.

In other news, this week Apple CEO Tim Cook responded in outrage to New York Times accusations that Apple abuses workers’ rights in Chinese factories, and green transportation blasted off as auto manufacturers unveiled a trio of high-performance vehicles – theTS030 hybrid race car, Toyota’s solar-powered 2000GT, and the sexy Lotus-based PG Elektrus. We also saw researchers developed the world’s smallest train from a strand of DNA, while Mitsubishi developed a way to make ships more efficient by blowing tiny air bubbles. Finally, we brought you the hottest news in high-tech fashion as the U.S. military developed a pair of high-tech undies to monitor soldiers’ vitals and Chanel built a life-size airplane plane for its spring 2012 Paris Couture Week show.

First White House Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, steps down

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

He was appointed with a fair bit of fanfare as the United States’ first Chief Technology Officer back in May of 2009, but it looks like Aneesh Chopra has decided that it’s now time to make room for the nation’s second CTO. The White House confirmed today that Chopra is stepping down from his position, noting that he has amassed a “dizzying array of accomplishments.” Among those are his contributions to the Obama administration’s national wireless strategy, a set of internet policy making principals, and a number of efforts related to the President’s open government strategy, including the Data.gov platform. No word on his successor just yet, nor is there any official word on what Chopra plans to do next — although The Washington Post reports that he’s expected to run for lieutenant governor of Virginia.

The Love Box is an analog video mixer, house of mirrors for your iPhone (video)

Category: Mobile PhonesGadgets & Tech @

There’s something romantic about hacking the iPhone, especially when it means finding ways to personalize the massively popular handset. Apps like Instagram may help you realize artistic talent, but software just doesn’t get those creative juices flowing like an old-fashioned piece of hardware can. Despite its taboo-sounding name, The Love Box isn’t an adult toy in the traditional sense, instead serving as an analog video (and stills) mixer for your iPhone 4 or 4S. Consisting of a wooden box and an angled sliding mirror, the homegrown contraption lets you simultaneously capture the action in front of and behind you in a single image. It was originally designed in Barcelona to capture two people conversing for a documentary called “The Love Box Conversations,” hence the name. The “lowest-tech accessory for the highest-tech phone” is available now as part of a very limited initial run of 100 units, and can be yours for €57.63 (about $ 77.50) if you hit up the source link below.

White House responds to SOPA petition as hearing is delayed, DNS blocking on the outs

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

It’s turned out to be a big weekend for those concerned about the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act. Yesterday came word that a key House hearing originally scheduled for Wednesday will be delayed until there is a “consensus” on the bill, and today the White House has issued an official statement on SOPA (and the Protect IP Act, its counterpart in the Senate) in response to a petition that drew thousands of signatures. While it doesn’t go quite as far as to issue a firm veto threat from the President, it does lay out the administration’s position in the clearest terms yet, including the condition that any proposed law “must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet through manipulation of the Domain Name System.” That follows word late last week that Representative Lamar Smith and Senator Patrick Leahy would indeed pull the DNS provisions from SOPA and PIPA. The White House statement is less specific in other respects, but it broadly states that the administration will “not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

In related news, the planned blackouts to protest SOPA and PIPA only seem to be increasing, with the popular xda-developers forum recently announcing that it will go dark at 8AM on January 18th, and return either at 8PM or as soon as it’s able to get 50,000 people to sign a pledge to contact their local Senator or Representative.
