Acer Liquid Glow hits the FCC, keeps its secrets

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

Acer’s Liquid series phones only occasionally reach the FCC, so it’s with some surprise that we’ve just spotted the still-fresh Liquid Glow getting the US agency’s approval under its E330 model name. Details are scarce as to whether or not there’s been any changes made to the Android 4.0 phone on its way out of Taiwan, however: there’s no telltale signs like cellular frequencies or carrier badging. If anything, Acer is hoping to keep information hush-hush by stamping a 180-day confidentiality seal on the manual and photos. It’s entirely possible that this is the international GSM model with no 3G support for North American carriers, so we wouldn’t get worked up about local release plans. Even so, knowing Canadian carrier Rogers’ tendency to offer Acer phones, there’s still a possibility that a version of the Liquid Glow might go on sale this side of the Pacific.

Nokia Lumia 900 hits the UK’s shelves ahead of schedule

Nokia Lumia 900 hits the UK's shelves ahead of schedule

Phones4U has started shipping the Nokia Lumia 900 a few days early, with stock of the white model available before the May 14 UK release date.

The black and cyan models aren’t expected to be available until tomorrow (May 11).

It’s bad news if you’re after the Lumia 900 on an O2 contract though, they won’t be shipping until the planned release date (but since that’s on Monday, there isn’t long to wait).

And if you were hoping to get the handset without a pesky contract at all, then you’ll have to hang on as Phones4U isn’t selling the handset SIM-free or on pay as you go.

Specific

But if you fall into the category of an O2-hating contract fan with a penchant for the colour white, then the handset is yours for the princely sum of nothing up front, and £36 a month for two years, which nabs you 900 minutes, 3,000 texts and 750MB of data per month.

And you could do worse – in our Nokia Lumia 900 review we couldn’t get enough of the gorgeous hardware, 4.3-inch screen and the excellent Windows Phone 7.5 OS.

Apple’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Spoof Circa 1984 Hits YouTube

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

Just a week after a video featuring a 1984-era Steve Jobs portraying FDR hit the web, even more magic from the vaults of Apple Corporate have hit the web, and this time we have theme music! And not just any theme music, we’re talking Ghostbusters.

NetworkWorld — which got the original “1944″ video scoop — posted an epic opening video from Apple’s 1984 International Sales Conference. The video is called “Blue Busters” and the conceit is a pretty straight Ghostbusters parody, with Apple employees working as “Blue Busters” to eradicate the use of IBM machines on the desktop.

As Macrumors points out, you can see cameos of Apple founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in the video at the 2:21, 3:00 and 4:04 marks.

Who would have guessed that Jobs was the kind of guy who was into making humorous corporate videos?

Sony’s barebones $299 Call of Duty: MW3 and 320GB PS3 bundle hits the streets May 25th

Sony's barebones $ 299 Call of Duty: MW3 and 320GB PS3 bundle hits the streets May 25th

Right on schedule, Sony and Activision have teamed up again for this “Limited Edition” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 bundle that’s due to ship May 25th. Unfortunately, one you’ve opened the box the special experience is pretty much over, with only standard console and game inside, replacing the usual Uncharted 3 offering — unlike last year’s 160GB Black Ops combo, there’s no free DLC (or anything else) to be had. Still, if you somehow don’t have Sony’s gaming machine in your living room already and have been aching to own some noobs on PSN then it’s a decent option, even if any perks will have to be earned in-game.

News in Brief: One More Thing: Google Play hits 15 billion app downloads

News in Brief: One More Thing: Google Play hits 15 billion app downloads

You can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop – …downloading apps. The artist formerly known as the Android Market, Google Play has hit 15 billion app downloads since its inception in 2008. Here comes the inevitable Apple comparison: the iOS App Store is sitting pretty on more than 25 billion downloads. But hey, Google, it’s still good. [TechCrunch]

Fight for your right – …to use the –ville suffix. Zynga’s decided it’s the only one allowed to use that particular assemblage of letters. The social gaming company is currently suing the developers behind PyramidVille because "Facebook users are likely to believe that PyramidVille is a member of Zynga’s ‘Ville family of games". Watch out, Pleasant-, Psycho-, Jackson-, Gaines-, Amity-, Small- and Cruella de-. [Kotaku]

Some action from the back section – With no help from you and no help from me, this Transformer toy actually transforms. Presumably it’s powered by the matrix that gives the autobots life. Or by magic. One of the two. [Kotaku]

In the next millennium I’ll still be old school – Remember when it was about to be the millennium and everyone was all "OMG you guys! Millennium Bug! TOTAL NUCLEAR MELTDOWN!" and then everything was fine? That’s how we see this whole toxic-caterpillar-threatens-Olympic-Games story playing out. [Gizmodo UK]

Putting all kinds of shame in the game you got – …if your game is driving or taking public transport when you could have walked, that is. Re:route is a new iOS app from Recycle Bank that promises to find you a greener, less congestion-y route to your London-based destination. You’ll get points for taking the greener options which equate to money off at M&S, Planet Organics and Champneys. You can also share journeys with friends on Facebook if you want. Please don’t though. [iTunes]

More rhymes than Jamaica got mangoes – The idea of digging a hole all the way through the earth may appeal to anyone who’s ever balked at a long-haul airfare, but the reality is that digging is boring and, as Antipode Map shows, start anywhere on the British Isles and you’ll just come up in the middle of the Indian Ocean. [Antipode Map]

Dip-dip-dive, so-socialise – Rockstar has relaunched its Social Club with a bunch of new social features, including redesigned profiles, new messaging systems, Facebook and Twitter integration and more. What a treat. [PR]

Rockstar

Money makin, money money makin – Rovio made $ 106 million (about £65.6 million) from Angry Birds and its associated merchandise in 2011. Lend us a fiver, will you Rovio? [BGR]

Time to get ill – The National Physical Laboratory released this video to explain the fundamentals fo the first atomic clock waaaay back in 1955. Warning: contains education. [Via Boing Boing]

Beard like a billygoat – People spend more time on Facebook on their phone than they do on the computer. Could that be because they have their phone with them all the time but only spend a certain amount of time in front of a computer? If OMT had a beard, we’d be stroking it thoughtfully right now. One-man Rocket EV hits over 200 mph in under 7 seconds (video)

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

Rocket EV

You won’t be driving away in this by the end of 2012, but you can expect it to smoke the EV competition. Shawn Lawless and his Rocket drag bike managed to hit just over 200 miles per hour on . We could eke out a few more words about the 14.2-kWh battery, but we’d prefer to let the video do the talking — it’s right after the break.
