Samsung and AT&T announce Focus 2: Windows Phone on May 20th for $ 50

The Nokia Lumia 900 may be the current leader when it comes to a quality Windows Phone handset on a budget, but Samsung is under-cutting the competition with the newly announced Focus 2. Succeeding the Focus and Focus S, this new handset offers LTE and comes in any color you like (so long as it’s white) for the low-low price of $ 49.99 on-contract. It has a 4-inch Super AMOLED (non-Plus) display up front and a five megapixel sensor in the back, capable of recording 720p video, paired with a VGA camera facing forward. No details on processor or memory at this point, but for that price we wouldn’t expect to be too overwhelmed. Intrigued? You can sate that curiosity when it hits AT&T stores on May 20th.

AT&T CEO voices regret over iPhone unlimited data model

Category: ComputersGadgets & Tech @

It’s always refreshing to hear the head of a major corporation cop to past mistakes — particularly in front of a large crowd of on-lookers. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted some misgivings about the way the carrier handled iPhone data, telling a crowd at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference in Los Angeles, “My only regret was how we introduced pricing in the beginning, because how did we introduce pricing? Thirty dollars and you get all you can eat.” Stephenson drove the point home by adding, “Every additional megabyte you use in this network, I have to invest capital.”

And, for the record, that certainly wasn’t the only thing about the iPhone that kept the exec up at night. Stephenson again,

You lie awake at night worrying about what is that which will disrupt your business model,” he said. “Apple iMessage is a classic example. If you’re using iMessage, you’re not using one of our messaging services, right?

No one ahead said it was easy being the chief.

AT&T stockholders vote down net neutrality proposal

AT&T stockholders vote down net neutrality

AT&T stockholders took to the ballot box today at their annual meeting and voted not only to reelect the entire board of directors, but also on a number of measures concerning how the company should conduct business. Chief amongst them was a provision that would have required the carrier to operate its network according to the tenets of net neutrality. Unfortunately for you (unless you’re an AT&T exec), the proposal was voted down by a pretty stunning margin. 94.1 percent of shareholders opposed, with only 5.9 casting their voice in favor of true network neutrality. For more info check out the PR after the break.

HTC One X sold early at AT&T, spotted in the wild

HTC One X sold early at AT&T

HTC’s hotly anticipated One X isn’t supposed to ship to AT&T customers until May 6th, but there’s a reason we’re emphasizing the whole “supposed” thing. One lucky reader has seemingly managed to convince one particular store to sell them a handset early, with $ 199 (and a new two-year agreement) being all it took to grab hold of what’ll undoubtedly be one of 2012′s strongest Android phones. There’s a gallery of shots below as proof, and if you’d like to try your luck at a local outfit, we certainly won’t step up to stop you. (But look, you’ll probably be waiting a few more weeks — just sayin’.)

Nokia’s White Lumia 900 reportedly available now at AT&T stores

Nokia's White Lumia 900 reportedly available now at AT&T stores

We’d previously heard AT&T’s White Lumia 900 was slated for a release on April 22nd, but photos tweeted by the outfit’s Chris Weber would suggest the Mango device is up for grabs now. By the looks of it, at least a pair of customers were able to walk into a Rethink Possible shop and grab a pale piece of the Lumia pie for themselves. Naturally, AT&T’s site still doesn’t have the Windows Phone handset listed, while the Cyan flavor remains out of stock. Perhaps, now it’s a good time to head to your local AT&T store and cough up those 99 bucks, or get it gratis through tomorrow. Be sure to drop us a line if you were able to take one of Nokia’s own unicorns home with you.

Hands-on with AT&T Labs prototypes: ShadowPuppets and haptic steering wheel

Hands-on with AT&T Labs prototypes: ShadowPuppets and haptic steering wheel

We’re not done with the AT&T prototypes yet. After putting our rears in the seat of a Porsche 911 and turning our questionable English into even more questionable Spanish, Ma Bell gave us a glimpse at some super rough devices fresh from the labs. The first one we got our hands on, really didn’t need us to put our hands on it. ShadowPuppets sticks a webcam to a pico projector (literally… with gaffers tape) to create a touchless “multitouch” interface for your phone. Rather than have friends gather around your tiny iPhone display or force a person to awkwardly reach across you and tap on your handset, this concept lets anyone simply cast shadows to control the interface. It’s not terribly dissimilar from a number of other projects out there, except it’s specifically geared at turning smartphone interaction into a social experience. The demo required the assistance of an Alienware laptop, and the pinch to zoom function was a little wonky to say the least. Still, it was pretty easy to see how this might prove useful in daily life.

The other concept on hand was the haptic feedback steering wheel the company dreamed up with help from Carnegie Mellon. While the research may sound compelling, the device it self couldn’t be any rougher around the edges… literally. The design consisted of roughly cut chunks of foam taped (this time with packing tape, we believe) haphazardly to a game controller. On each piece of foam was a tiny vibrating actuator connected to an Arduino that dangled below in a vaguely menacing tangle of cables. The sensation as the vibrations travel in circular patterns (clockwise to indicate a right turn, counter clockwise for left), was strange to say the least. But, as the cycles sped up and the turn approached we grew less uncomfortable with the feeling of a vibrating steering wheel. And we actually found the increasing tempo an easier way to discern when a turn was approaching than hearing a robotic voice shout out, “turn left in 500 feet.” Check out the gallery above for some not so glamorous shots of the future of tech.
