AT&T launches pilot program for expanded push-to-talk services

AT&T launches pilot program for expanded push-to-talk servicesLet’s face it, walkie-talkies are far from glamorous, but for large and small enterprises that rely on real-time communication, the WWII artifact remains an integral part of the workday. Now, AT&T has set forth on a journey to give its push-to-talk services a modern makeover, and it’s recruiting a few partners to join the quest. In addition to providing PTT-enabled smartphones, the carrier will be testing IP-based technologies that offer workflow automation for tasks such as fleet management and dispatch. Additionally, the system will also offer integration with traditional radio systems such as PMR and LMR, which means an organization won’t need to transition its entire crew at once. You can find more about AT&T’s hybrid communications system in the PR after the break.

SEC sides with Beastie Boys’ Mike D, says AT&T must allow shareholder vote on net neutrality

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

Michael Diamond may be best known as Mike D of the Beastie Boys, but he’s also an AT&T shareholder, and he’s now played a central role in forcing a shareholder vote on net neutrality. He, along with his wife Tamra Davis and John P. Silva of Silva Artist Management previously submitted a proposal to AT&T arguing that shareholders should be allowed to vote a resolution that recommended the company “publicly commit to operate its wireless broadband network consistent with network neutrality principles.” AT&T unsurprisingly rejected that proposal, stating that it would “directly interfere with its network management practices,” but the SEC has now stepped in and said that net neutrality has become a “significant policy consideration,” and that it can no longer be excluded from shareholder ballots. As Bloomberg Businessweek notes, companies can challenge the SEC’s findings in court, although it remains to be seen if AT&T or other carriers will take that step. No further word from Mike D on the matter, so we’ll take this opportunity to share another important message of his after the break.

AT&T Galaxy Note review

Category: Mobile PhonesGadgets & Tech @

It was once said that if a phone or tablet used a stylus its hardware designers had blown it. It was also said that if the software on that device contained a task manager that coders had similarly missed the mark. The Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T contains what many would consider a stylus and, if you hold down the Home button, you’re presented with what can only be described as a task manager.

So the Galaxy Note, Samsung’s massive 5.3-inch “superphone,” is critically flawed then, right? No. It is, in fact, one of the best phones to hit the market since another Samsung powerhouse — the Galaxy Nexus. It’s a device with a lot to love and is the kind of phone that would make almost every Android aficionado swoon. However, with its massive 5.3-inch display and generally understated styling, it isn’t for everybody. We reviewed it before in European guise, but now read on to see if AT&T’s $ 300 LTE version of this big brute is just right for you.

AT&T U-Verse iPad app combines DVR control and companion features

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

It’s been over a year since we saw AT&T first demo a U-verse connected tablet app with second screen companion features it called “ComplemenTV” and last week it officially launched for the iPad. AT&T U-verse for iPad can act as a remote control for any the company’s DVRs in the home, as well as pull in extra info about the content that’s playing. If you’re away from home, it can still pull up guide data, program the DVR, or play a selection of VOD shows just like the U-verse’s other mobile apps. what it doesn’t have however, unlike many other pay-TV tablet apps out there, is live TV streaming of any kind. Of course, it is a free add-on, so check after the break for a quick video demo or hit iTunes to download it yourself.

WSJ: AT&T and Verizon will sell LTE iPads

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

Citing sources “familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal is now stating rather unequivocally that both AT&T and Verizon Wireless are set to begin selling LTE versions of Apple’s iPad. The latest revelation is hardly a leap of faith, as rumors to this effect have been swirling for a month now. Still, it coincides rather nicely with the recent chatter surrounding the launch of Apple’s next iPad, which is currently thought to launch during the first week of March. The WSJ further elaborates

AT&T prepares internal systems for shared data, launch date still TBD

AT&T prepares internal systems for shared data, launch date still TBD
We’ve known AT&T’s had shared data plans in the works for a healthy amount of time, as the GSM carrier let the cat out of the bag many seasons ago. And while Ralph de la Vega hasn’t hid his company’s aspirations from view, the network hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about when the party is going to get started. If the above and below screenshots are any indication, however, AT&T has already added support for group data into Telegence, the internal system employees use to manage customer accounts.

According to the memo seen above, Telegence has been tweaked to include a new group-level data feature node “in preparation for the launch of Shared Data.” This verbiage seems to suggest the new plans are coming in the very near future, but the communication is quick to point out that the launch date has yet to be determined. Unfortunately, since the new adjustments aren’t functional just yet, it could simply mean the company’s beginning the first wave of crucial internal testing. Regardless, its presence in AT&T’s systems is a great step forward, and a welcome one that’s been a long time coming. The question is, will the new plans arrive before Verizon can push its version out to the masses?

[Thanks, anonymous]
