Samsung Rugby Smart gets rendered as it anxiously awaits our drops and kicks

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

Rugged phones seem to be the exception more than the rule when it comes to smartphones. However, AT&T apparently has one in the pipeline dubbed the Samsung Rugby Smart. Destined to be the latest addition to the lineup of Sammy’s military-spec devices, the Smart will — as you probably guessed — be the first member of the Rugby family to ditch the clamshell form factor and take on Android at the same time. Pocketnow, which leaked the above press renders, also mentions that the device is slated to offer Android 2.3.5, 512MB of RAM, HSPA+ and a 1,650mAh battery. Nothing impressive, to say the least, unless there are a few other surprises that await us sometime in the (hopefully) near future. We still haven’t heard a peep from AT&T, but word has it that when it’s finally ready to storm shelves, we should expect to see it available for roughly $ 100. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll even hear more about the Smart in, oh, the next week or so?

EU to rule on international piracy law

EU to rule on international piracy law

The European Union’s highest court has been asked to rule on the legality of the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta) that 22 EU countries including the UK have already signed.

The controversial agreement has sparked protests in some areas of Europe, with Germany and Denmark both refusing to sign the agreement.

As a result, the EU’s head of trade Karel De Gucht is asking the courts to establish whether or not the agreement complies with "the EU’s fundamental rights and freedoms".

Censorship

Acta is intended to make it easier to pursue online pirates by bringing in common, international standards so that if you’re breaking the law in, say, the US, you’re also breaking the law in the UK, France, and anywhere else that has signed up to Acta.

Critics of the agreement point to the fact that it has been developed in secret by rights holders and others with vested interests and the fact that it requires ISPs to be responsible for and police all actions of its users, creating an online nanny state and infringing on free speech.

De Gucht explained, "Let me be very clear: I share people’s concern for these fundamental freedoms… especially over the freedom of the internet.

"This debate must be based upon facts, and not upon the misinformation and rumour that has dominated social media sites and blogs in recent weeks."

Nokia teases with imaging-themed video ahead of MWC

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

Well what do we have here? Nokia just posted a delightful little video on its YouTube channel hinting at some kind of announcement during Mobile World Congress next week. The imaging-themed video entitled “Get ready to capture a pure view” shows beautiful snowy landscapes and uses words like detail, depth and definition. While we’ve enjoyed Nokia’s recent foray into all things white, the company’s current imaging flagship is getting a bit long in the tooth. Could this be about an N8 successor running Symbian Belle? Guess we’ll have to wait until Monday to find out.

Barnes & Noble 2012 Q3 Report: loss-making Nook generates sales, tears

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

It’s that time of the year when Barnes & Noble’s accountants reveal the figures for the quarter to determine if the age of print is over. Turns out there’s some good news for bookseller. Overall sales for the chain increased five percent: the company took $ 2.4 billion through the cash registers. That was split $ 1.49 billion (up two percent) in high-street retail, online sales took $ 420 million (up 32 percent year-on-year) and the Nook in all its forms and glories took $ 542 million (up 38 percent). The only grey cloud was that sales in college-only stores dropped three percent, thanks in part to renting textbooks to impecunious freshmen. They’re probably all using that money on buying digital content on their Nooks: digital content purchases increased by 85 percent in a single quarter. Like rival Amazon, it wouldn’t release how many devices were sold, except to say it likely maintained its market share.

However, all of that (pretty) good news is a bit of a smokescreen: B&N won’t reveal its profits after interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization has been deducted. Pre ITDA income dropped 12 percent from the same period in 2011 and the company has revealed that the BN.com and Nook businesses made a combined loss of $ 94 million, with annual income looking to be in negative figures.

Update: A tidbit from the conference call, the company believes the device currently holds around 30 percent of the overall e-reader market: using numbers direct from the publishers themselves.

Simulated NASA mission to ask ‘Are there snacks on Maaaaaaarrrrrs?’

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

When we’ve been forced to travel to an alien world, the one thing that makes us more likely to turn feral and murder our crew-mates than anything else is a lack of variety at mealtimes. Fortunately, Cornell University has teamed up with the University of Hawaii to build a simulated Mars mission to determine which foods people don’t mind constantly consuming, given that there are no In-N-Out Burger franchises on the red planet. The mock base will be constructed in the midst of a Hawaiian lava flow, with the crews dressed in “spacesuits” and eating a mix of NASA-issue rations and shelf-stable foods like flour, sugar and freeze-dried meat. Applications for the four-month program remain open until the end of the month, so if you fancy all the free (bland) food you can manage, head on down to sign up!

Bing's two new 'death to print, death to retail' features get detailed
Ever felt like Bing wasn’t for retail stores or print journalism? The two latest Windows Phone updates won’t dispel that fantasy, sadly. Bing Vision been update so it can read Barcodes, CD, DVD and Book Covers so you can find out how much cheaper the item in your hand is if ordered online. Image Matching for Newspapers won’t arrive until March, but you’ll be able to snap a photo of an article you’ve seen in a local rag and, if its in Microsoft’s database, you’ll be linked directly to the original version of the article online. That’s brick and mortar retail and newspapers taken care of, we’ll be waiting around to see what’s next on Bing’s hit-list — orphanages, probably.
