Screen Grabs: Big Bang Theory’s Raj falls head over heels… for Siri (video)

Category: CamerasGadgets & Tech @

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Finally! A TV show that we’ve actually seen (sorry, Gossip Girl). The Big Bang Theory’s most recent episode featured Raj finding love with Siri. The uptight astrophysicist is incapable of speaking to women unless he’s been on the sauce, but finds no such social inhibition with his iPhone’s virtual assistant. Of course, like any geek receiving attention from the opposite gender, Dr Koothrappali soon becomes unhealthily infatuated with the handset, leading him on a trip to Cupertino to meet the person behind the microphone symbol. We won’t spoil what happens, but you can probably work it out — there’s video past the break.

Analysts Debunk Rumor That iPhone 4S Is Influencing Competitor Launch Dates

A report from Taiwanese publication Digitimes says smartphone manufacturers Samsung, HTC, LG and Nokia are launching their new products in Q2 2012 instead of Q1 in order to avoid direct competition from Apple’s iPhone 4S. Digitimes sources said that sales of the iPhone 4S “will remain at peak in the first quarter of 2012 and then begin to decline,” so many handset makers will be waiting to unveil 2012 models at Mobile World Congress in late February — with launch dates after that.

At first glance, the Digitimes reports seems tenable. At this year’s CES, many products revealed at the show were announced with release dates of April or later, and “in the coming months” was a common refrain among PR reps when asked when products would hit retail.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t look like Apple’s smartphone success bears much influence on its competitors’ release dates.

“If they did that, they’d never release anything,” iSupply analyst Francis Sideco said. “I’m sure it’s a factor, a consideration, but I doubt it’d be the factor that would drive somebody’s marketing plan. That’s like letting your competitor drive your product roadmap for you.”

Apple had blockbuster sales and earnings last quarter, particularly in the iPhone department. Sales of the iPhone 4S, which was announced Oct. 5 and released into the wild shortly thereafter, were especially remarkable, helping Apple to achieve a record 37.04 million in iPhone sales.

Although many smartphone manufacturers saw lackluster sales and slow to no growth over the holiday season, Samsung still managed to come out on top. Samsung sold 300 million phones last year and experienced record profits. If any company isn’t afraid of Apple, even in the face of lengthy, global-wide court battles, it’s certainly Samsung.

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney also thought today’s rumor sounded unlikely.

“Samsung and Nokia have both released phones during the iPhone 4S frenzy,” Dulaney said. True: Nokia launched its Lumia 710 smartphone on T-Mobile Jan. 11, and its Lumia 800 in Europe during Q4. Samsung’s flagship Android Ice Cream Sandwich phone, the Galaxy Nexus, also went on sale while 4S sales were peaking over the holiday season. Samsung is also releasing its Galaxy Note smartphone in February, during Q1.

Sideco points out that announcing phones during this quarter is basically as good as releasing them, as far as marketing impact is concerned. Nearly every handset maker unveiled at least one new smartphone at CES: HTC debuted the Titan II, while Sony unveiled the Xperia S, to name a few. We will likely be seeing many more product reveals once Mobile World Congress rolls around — but that still puts announcements in Q1, not Q2.

Apple may be a huge influencer in terms of smartphone trends, and a huge mountain of competition to overcome, but it’s very unlikely that Apple is the reason smartphone manufacturers are releasing phones later than Q1.

LG’s triple SIM A290: the phone every Russian Casanova needs

Category: Mobile PhonesGadgets & Tech @

Dual-SIM phones are perfect for when the carriers are desperate for your business, keeping your work life separate, or to mask your philandering — but what if two isn’t enough? LG (stands for Lucky Goldstar, now you know) is producing a phone with a third SIM slot, only one less than the ridiculously equipped OTECH F1. The A290 candy-bar throwback sports a 176 x 220, 2.2-inch display, 1.3 megapixel camera, LED flashlight and a 1500 mAh battery. Russians (for it’s exclusive to the nation) looking to swell their SIM collection can do so from next month at the cost of €75 ($ 100).

Boxee desktop app being removed from servers tonight, get it while you can

Category: ReviewsGadgets & Tech @

Boxee 1.5

We knew that the Boxee desktop app’s days were numbered, we just didn’t realize how numbered. It was only the day after Christmas that we learned version 1.5 would be the last to ship for Linux, Windows and OS X. Now, with January coming to a close, its life is officially being snuffed out. Tonight, as you flip the calendar to February, Boxee will be busy purging its servers of the installable media center software. What that means, in case you hadn’t figured it out, is that this is your last chance to download the official app for your desktop OS of choice as the company shifts focus to the Boxee Box and other streaming appliances. Of course, we’re sure someone will pick up the torch and update the program, but as far as Boxee is concerned it has no desktop son.

Gadget Lab Podcast: Motorola Razr Maxx, Headphone Wars, Beat By Dr. Dre

Category: ComputersGadgets & Tech @

‘, ‘anId’); brightcove.createExperiences();

This week on the Gadget Lab podcast, the gang talks record Apple revenues, takes a look at the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, and riffs on what leaders in the hip-hop community have to say about their namesake headphone offerings.

Reviews editor Michael Calore and Gadget Lab staff writer Mike Isaac launch with a discussion of mobile device company earnings. Basically, if you didn’t have at least one successful mobile product, you tanked, says Isaac. And if your company’s name is Apple, well, you blew everyone else out of the ballpark. Apple had a record-breaking quarter, primarily due to phenomenal iPhone 4S sales.

Next, Mike Isaac goes hands-on with the new Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, an update to the 2011 Razr that amps up battery life to deliver more than 20 hours of talk time. However, with the added battery capacity, you lose some of that signature Razr thinness, trading in the current Razr’s curved back for more of a brick-shaped chassis. The Maxx is a fast, dual-core smartphone, and we’ll have a deeper look at its performance in the Wired Reviews section in the coming weeks.

The Wired team then checks out what’s going on in the headphone scene with a video of Ludacris, 50 Cent, DJ Pauly D (of Jersey Shore infamy), Dr. Dre, and P. Diddy. All of these guys say their headphones have the best sound and visual appeal, leaving DJ Mike “Snackfight” Calore to question everything he’s ever known about headphones — but only for a split second.

Calore then looks at a $ 280 pair of wireless headphones from Beats by Dr. Dre and tells us what he really thinks. Basically: Don’t waste your money on the brand name, folks.

Apple updates Airport stations and Time Capsule, brings bug fixes and iCloud support

Category: AppleGadgets & Tech @

It looks as if the Final Cut Pro X update wasn’t the only software refresh Cupertino folks had in store for us. In this particular case, it’s the company’s networking and backup goods — also known as Airport Express, Extreme and Time Capsule — that are on the receiving end of the virtual enhancements. The 802.11n stations are getting a fix that solves “an issue with wireless performance,” while the capsule is seeing some much needed iCloud support. Additional Apple cloud integration doesn’t stop there, as you’ll also be able to remotely access your Airport disk. Though, it’s worth mentioning that in order to take advantage of the new features you’ll have to update your Airport Utility to the latest version (6.0). That means you’ll also need Lion, so those of you keepin’ your OS X old school with Snow Leopard will be out of luck. Looking to up your wireless game? Hit up the source link for the full details.
